Harrison/Dever Crib Complex Structural Renovations

Chicago, IL

Paschen is making structural renovations to the Harrison-Dever Intake Crib, the largest intake crib in the Department of Water Management’s water treatment system.

The cribs are two interconnected buildings, located 2.5 miles east of the shoreline, in Lake Michigan. The Carter H. Harrison Crib was built in 1900, and was rendered inactive in 1998; and the William E. Dever Crib was built in 1935 and is still active. The crib provides water to the City by pumping it through a 20-foot diameter tunnel, running 200 feet below the lake’s surface to the James W. Jardine Purification Plant.

Carter H. Harrison Crib – primarily exterior repairs including the landing area, gallery walkway brackets, brick and stone masonry, shell and landing steel sheet pile cleaning and painting, replacement of deteriorated concrete walking surfaces including rain water drainage improvements, timber bridge deck and wood stringer replacement with steel components, cleaning and painting of steel truss bridge between Harrison and Dever Cribs.

William E. Dever Crib – Cleaning interior surfaces and painting steel; repairs to steel checker plate flooring and bulkhead seal, modifications to steel framing for bulkhead lifting devices, installation of manual chain hoists, and clean and paint select exterior steel surfaces.

Calumet Primary Settling Tanks

Chicago, IL

This project represented Phase Two of a major facility upgrade at the Calumet Water Reclamation Plant and was part of a $500 million construction program. Phase One, also undertaken by our team, included preliminary sewage screening and pumping facilities. Phase Two involved construction of a new grit building with eight aerated grit chambers, grit removal and dewatering systems, and associated mechanical and electrical facilities, equipment, service tunnels, and connections. The project also included 12, 155-feet diameter, cast-in-place reinforced concrete, circular primary settling tanks, along with several interconnecting service tunnels, four new tunnel access pump stations, two 96-inch force mains extending to the grit building from the Phase One pump building, and an East Gate House and associated roadways for use by the District Police.

Thornton Quarry

Thornton, IL

As part of the Deep Tunnel project – designed to prevent flooding at Thornton Quarry – we constructed a 208’ wide by 116’ tall roller compacted concrete (RCC) Gap Dam. Construction included reinforced concrete quarry plugs within the level two and level three haul tunnels that extend through the Rock Dam at elevation -180 ft and -297 ft CCD respectively. This involved the excavation of 130,000 CY of embankment, enabling us to construct an onsite berm along with work platforms for contract deep drilling operations. A 9,425-foot-long double-row grout curtain was also constructed and extended around the entire perimeter of the Thornton Composite Reservoir to depths up to 550 ft below ground surface.

Stop Logs & Diversion Pumps at Wilmette Pump Station & Evanston Pump Station Rehab

Wilmette, IL

This project was completed in three phases. The first phase isolated the existing pump station using steel sheeting to construct cofferdams to hold back Lake Michigan on one side and the North Channel on the other. Once the pump station was dewatered, we removed old equipment and concrete, poured new concrete, and installed new pumps, gates, bar racks, and stop logs. The tunnels that run underneath the pump station were also repaired and relined. During Phase Two, we installed cofferdams around the Diversion Channel, dewatered the site, replaced old concrete, and removed the existing roller gate structure. Three new roller gates were installed along with bar racks and stop logs. For Phase Three of the project, we installed a permanent steel sheet pile wall and removed and replaced an existing concrete retaining wall.
