Providing resources and training to better prepare students for the construction industry
Since 2015, Paschen has partnered with George Westinghouse College Prep, a diverse selective enrollment high school in Chicago’s Garfield Park neighborhood, to provide resources and training to better prepare students for careers in the architecture, engineering, and construction industries.
Each year Westinghouse and F.H. Paschen present an installment of the P.I.E. Series: “Paschen: Innovations in Engineering.” The P.I.E. Series, which explores new innovations in engineering, provides an opportunity for students and families to explore engineering courses at Westinghouse and to learn about our new Paschen Scholars program, a competitive four-year internship program.
“The program leaders took me out of my comfort zone and submersed me into the real world. They took us to real job sites where they are working and showed us what it takes to make space for new runways at O’Hare International Airport and how to build a pedestrian bridge over Lake Shore Drive. They showed us the planning and creativity it takes to modernize our city’s public transportation system, and challenged us to design and create our own bus shelters. Ask anyone and they will tell you that I’ll be the first one asking what everything on site is, because I realize now that what I do in this program is the greatest opportunity in my life.”
– Diana Mendoza, Paschen Scholar
In the summer of 2016, we welcomed our first class of Paschen Engineering Scholars. Six freshman joined us for the summer to learn about various aspects of the construction industry, including safety, quality, estimating, and AutoCAD. Each summer going forward, Paschen will add a new class of Paschen Engineering Scholars.
“Westinghouse is so thankful for our partnership with F.H. Paschen. As we enter the fourth year of our relationship, the first class of Paschen Engineering Scholars is applying to highly selective colleges with renowned engineering programs, and our engineering program is larger than ever! I couldn’t be more thrilled about the support from the entire Paschen family to continue to develop once-in-a-lifetime opportunities for our students.”
